A recent study by the University of Texas Medical School, found that infants who received early and aggressive treatment of jaundice had fewer signs and symptoms of trauma-related brain injury issues in the future, according to an article published in October 2008 in The New England Journal of Medicine.

The study of the information used for approximately 1974 children who were in one of two groups for any of the infants who received early and aggressive treatment of phototherapy when their bilirubin levels reached 5 milligrams (mg) / dL and children who received conservative treatment of phototherapy to achieve the levels bilirubin 8 mg / dL.

Throughout the study, and at first the children were tested on the following:

* Blindness

* Hearing loss

* The moderate or severe cerebral palsy

* Cognitive development

* Neurodevelopmental Disorders

The study compared the proportion of children who had neuro-developmental impairment and found that children with "aggressive treatment group were less likely to have neuro developmental impairment – who were children in the conservative treatment group, the study said.

The results of this study may have been in the development potential of a new injury treatment and prevention of brain research the authors explained that while "the bilirubin be toxic, is also an antioxidant and could protect against damage from oxygen chemical reactions that occur in the body or after injury. "However, more research is needed to better understand the results and potential of this treatment among victims of TBI.
