How to introduce puppy to riding in a trailer (behind a bicycle)?

I’m looking into getting a dog trailer for the back of my bike (see the link below). I love to ride and ride frequently. But since I got a cocker puppy a few months back (he’s now 4 months old) I haven’t been able to ride because I’ve chosen to walk/run him instead of riding. I by no means intend for this to replace his exercise, I just really want him to come along and enjoy himself.

Having said that, what would be the best way to introduce him to the idea of the trailer/bike/riding along behind me? I hate to just throw him in cold turkey and start riding. What are some gradual steps I could take to get him used to it? He’s already crate trained, and his crate is made of the same material (canvas) as what the trailer is.
Thanks!

I have an idea if you are looking for the gentle approach.

Bring the trailer in the home and allow the cocker to play with toys or sleep in there. Let him get used to it as a safe place.

Hook it up to your bike and put in a toy or chew he loves along with a nice bed he is used to. This will be his safe place and just go on a small ride locally until you are sure of his comfort level. If he takes to it right away, you have yourself a new riding partner. If he is bothered and scared – just take it easy on a few short rides locally until he has adjusted.

I think it is wonderful that you are doing this. Your puppy must be such a happy boy!
